boys and toys

Iv never pushed any gender specific toy on either of my two kiddos. I just follow their cues, and while my son does enjoy playing daddy

he also loves his cars!

and same goes with my daughter :)
she can be very nurturing

but shes also a fan of soccer!
so my question to you as parents or parents to be is. what is your veiw on toys that are typically gender specific?

  1. I think it is good to have all different types of toys for both girls and boys. Playing help them learn about life and the world. I think I already shared this story with you, but I will add it for your readers.

I had a friend once who was always complaining to that her husband didn't play with the kids. He wanted nothing to do with the care of the kids from diapers to baths to feeding and putting to bed. That was a woman's work. (PIG! oh -- sorry, I digress) This had brought her to my doorstep in tears on more than one occaision.

One particular such day, as we sat talking, our daughters, both 4, asked if they could take some dollies outside. I told them they could each choose one doll, no more. Off they went with her 2 year, Jake, in tow and when they came downstairs all 3 had a doll. It was obvious to me that they had used poor Jake to get that one extra doll out the door, but Robin went ballistic. "No, Jakey... dolls are for girls. You don't wanna be a sissy. You don't wanna play with dolls."
"ROBIN!", I yelled to stop her. "Can't you see what you are saying?" She couldn't, so I continued. "Why do little girls play with dolls?"
"To practice being mommies", she replied.
"Exactly! And herein lies your whole problem. Little boys are told for the first ~20 years of their lives that playing with babies will make them a sissy. Then they father a child and it is put in their arms and they have no idea what to do with it. Nobody taught them how to be a daddy."
Robin just looked at me for a moment... and handed the dolly back to her son.
If we provide a variety of tools (toys) for our children.... they will have endless options as adults.
